“POUR LES JEUNES PAR LES JEUNES” – “FOR THE YOUNG BY THE YOUNG – BILATERAL PROJECT : 2- 19 JULY 2005

The Buzz Club at Beeslack Community High School in Penicuik resounded to the strains of the Marseillaise to celebrate the French National Day on 14 July.  A group of 17 teenagers from Penicuik’s twin town, L’Isle sur la Sorgue, spent a week running a “French Club” as well as helping with Buzz club activities.  To create a festive French atmosphere they organised activities such as making Tricolore flags, decorating biscuits in red, white and blue, making decorations and teaching the children a dance from Provence, their local area.  The Bastille Day ceilidh was attended by members and helpers from the Buzz club as well as friends of Twinning.  During the rest of the week the teenagers ran craft workshops making lavender sachets, puppets, badges as well as leading games and treasure hunts.  All activities were run in French and the local children responded positively to the young people’s enthusiasm.

The week at the Buzz Club was part of a two way project organised by Penicuik-L’Isle sur la Sorgue Twinning Association, with funding from the British Council and European Union.  The week before a group of 13 Penicuik teenagers had run a successful “English School” in L’Isle sur la Sorgue.
