Penicuik
is an excellent base for visits to Scotland.
It is only twenty minutes by car from Edinburgh
and there is an excellent bus service to the capital with its
abundance of attractions for all ages and interests.
Being
close to the Edinburgh City Bypass, which links to other major
roads, it is easy to travel to other parts of
Scotland
in all directions.
To
the South the Scottish
Borders offer beautiful countryside with gentle rolling hills.
There is a wealth of history going back to the time of the
Romans and beyond. To the East is
the coast of the Firth of Forth with its attractive former fishing
villages and rugged coastal scenery dotted with castles, which
played a major part in the Scottish wars of independence. To the
North of Edinburgh you cross the Forth Road Bridge and head for the
Highlands, passing Stirling,
site of the famous battle won by William Wallace.
To the West you
pass Linlithgow,
birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, as the M8 motorway takes you to
Glasgow and the Islands. From Edinburgh all of these places can be reached by train
as well.
Close
to Penicuik there are
many fascinating places to discover such as Rosslyn
Chapel. There are
lots of outdoor activities such as a visit to Hillend
Ski Centre, pony
trekking or walking in the Pentland
Hills.
There
are many clubs and organisations in Penicuik catering for people of
all ages. For example sports
clubs including rugby and football, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and Boys
Brigade for youngsters. For those particularly interested in Scottish
culture we have a pipe band, folk club, ceilidh dancing club and
an arts association.
